How to Use the Crypto Profit Calculator

Using this calculator takes less than a minute. Fill in four key numbers and hit Calculate P&L:

  1. Buy Price — the price per coin (or token) when you purchased. For example, if you bought 0.5 BTC at $30,000 each, enter 30000.
  2. Sell Price — the current price, or the price at which you sold (or plan to sell). This is used to calculate your unrealised or realised gain.
  3. Quantity — how many coins or tokens you hold or sold. Fractional amounts are supported (e.g. 0.00025 BTC).
  4. Buy Fee & Sell Fee — the trading fee percentage charged by your exchange. Coinbase charges 0.6%, Binance charges 0.1–0.075% for spot trades, Kraken charges 0.16–0.26%. Leave at 0 if you are unsure or trading fee-free.

The results panel shows your profit or loss in USD, your ROI percentage, total invested, total received, fees paid, and the break-even price — the exact sell price at which you would neither gain nor lose money after accounting for all fees.

The Formula

The calculator uses these formulas:

  • Buy Fee Amount = Quantity × Buy Price × (Buy Fee % / 100)
  • Sell Fee Amount = Quantity × Sell Price × (Sell Fee % / 100)
  • Total Invested = Quantity × Buy Price + Buy Fee Amount
  • Total Received = Quantity × Sell Price − Sell Fee Amount
  • Profit / Loss = Total Received − Total Invested
  • ROI (%) = (Profit / Total Invested) × 100
  • Break-Even Price = Total Invested / (Quantity × (1 − Sell Fee / 100))

The break-even formula is derived by solving for the sell price that makes Profit = 0. It factors in the sell fee that will be charged at the point of exit — which is why the break-even is always higher than the original buy price when fees are non-zero.

Worked Example

You buy 0.5 BTC at $30,000 with a 0.1% buy fee, and later sell at $45,000 with a 0.1% sell fee:

  • Buy Fee = 0.5 × 30,000 × 0.001 = $15.00
  • Sell Fee = 0.5 × 45,000 × 0.001 = $22.50
  • Total Invested = 15,000 + 15 = $15,015.00
  • Total Received = 22,500 − 22.50 = $22,477.50
  • Profit = 22,477.50 − 15,015 = $7,462.50
  • ROI = (7,462.50 / 15,015) × 100 = 49.7%
  • Break-Even = 15,015 / (0.5 × 0.999) ≈ $30,060.06

Practical Examples

Example 1 — Bitcoin Bull Run Profit

An investor purchases 0.5 BTC at $30,000 in early 2023 and sells at $65,000 near the 2024 peak. With 0.1% fees each way:

  • Total Invested: $15,015
  • Total Received: $32,467.50
  • Profit: $17,452.50 (+116.2% ROI)
  • Total Fees Paid: $47.50

Even at a low 0.1% fee, the absolute fee amounts grow significantly with larger positions. At $100k in BTC, even 0.1% fees cost $100 per trade — and $200 round-trip.

Example 2 — Altcoin Loss with High Fees

A trader buys 10,000 SHIB equivalent at $0.000012 on a DEX with a 0.5% swap fee, and sells at $0.000010 with another 0.5% fee:

  • Total Invested: $0.1206 (including buy fee)
  • Total Received: $0.0995 (after sell fee)
  • Loss: −$0.0211 (−17.5%)

High DEX fees (0.3–1%) combined with slippage make small altcoin trades much more expensive than centralized exchange trades. The break-even requires a significant price increase just to cover entry and exit costs.

Example 3 — Ethereum Swing Trade

A swing trader buys 5 ETH at $2,800 and sells at $3,200, using Binance (0.1% fee) with a BNB fee discount (effectively 0.075%):

  • Total Invested: $14,010.50
  • Total Received: $15,988
  • Profit: $1,977.50 (+14.1% ROI)
  • Total Fees: $22.50
  • Break-Even: $2,802.10

Low fees on major exchanges like Binance mean break-even is very close to the buy price, making short-term swing trading viable even for modest price moves.

Why Break-Even Price Matters

Most traders focus only on their buy price when setting stop-losses. However, the true break-even — accounting for the sell fee you will pay on exit — is always slightly higher. For a trade with 0.5% buy and sell fees, your break-even is approximately 1% above your buy price. This means you need a 1% gain just to avoid a loss. For high-fee environments (DEXes, some CEXes charging 0.5%+), this makes scalping and frequent trading extremely difficult to profit from.
